Oakdene History
In 1847 the small Klein Karoo town known as 'Veldskoen' was renamed Oudtshoorn. Six years later, Oakdene was built on the main road by Mr. J.H. Mulder, who later also built Oudtshoorn's magnificent sandstone Moederkerk and the Pastorie. In Oakdene, Mulder's style blended typical Cape vernacular with elements of traditional Victorian and Klein Karoo architecture.
The original Victorian trelliswork which still stands perfectly intact today, was added around the turn of the Century. The 'lei-watersloot' running in front of the house is the last remaining section of the original lei which supplied water to the Oudtshoorn of old. In order to preserve the lei, the historic facade and the oak trees in front of Oakdene, the building was declared a National Monument in 1988. Oakdene is one of the oldest & finest examples of architecture from the early days of Oudtshoorn.

Pelargonium
This all wood cottage is nestled up against fynbos covered kopje teeming with dassies and birds. Grey Rhebok and klipspringer are often seen close by. The main bedroom opens onto an entertainment deck with stunning views over the Olifants river valley.
Lilly
A quaint A-frame wooden chalet looking over a lilly covered dam to the Olifantsrivier valley. Perfect for 2 – 4 people.
Activities
Walking & Cycling
We have several paths through our 400 hectare farm. They lead through fynbos covered mountains and invariably reveal magnificent views. The cycling paths vary from rough fire paths to the pass which is tarred but steep. It is possible to walk for several several kilometers on the public roads on the mountain, from the farm to the beginning of the Groot Winterhoek Reserve.
Swimming
In the summer months our guests enjoy either their private pools (Heron House & Restio) or the communal pool or Temptation Dam. The dam, with its sandy edges and warm shallows, is ideal for children.
Fauna
It is well known that the Cape Floristic Region is one of the most biologically diverse areas on earth, home to over 9,000 species. The Groot Winterhoek Mountains, and especially the Reserve, are considered a vital sanctuary to the preservation of many endemic species, some of which are threatened. The variety is staggering – it is said that on every day of the year a different species starts flowering! Since acquiring Pampoen Fontein in 2000 the owners have cleared aprox. 350 hectares of alien plant species – thousands of man hours are still spent each year removing regrowth. Flower viewing is best from August to November when the bulbs are in flower – but from June to December proteas and pincushions are prolific, while from November to February the ericas are in bloom.
Animals
Rhebok are prolific – often seen grazing around the cottages in the early morning and evening. There’s a colony of dassies in the kopjie near Protea and Pelargonium. Klip Springer are often seen when walking among the rocks and evidence of the elusive mountain leopard is common: we once found a rhebok carcass wedged in a tree near Protea cottage.

We are centrally situated - only 35kms from Oudtshoorn and the world famous Cango Caves, ostrich farms and Cango Wildlife Ranch. Olivier's Rust offers you the most comfortable and affordable accommodation in the Little Karoo. Our units are fully equipped in order to give you that home away from home experience.

Accommodation
In each self-catering unit you will find a double and two single beds with en-suite bathroom and a small kitchenette with microwave, stove and fridge. For your absolute comfort we have added a flat screen TV with DSTV viewing and air-conditioning. The chalets are serviced everyday by our friendly staff.
Self Catering Chalets
There are eight fabulous self catering units that each sleep four guests. The units are serviced daily and have DStv, air conditioning, a shower and bath as well as a small kitchen. Each unit has one double en-suite room and one other room with two single beds. The fully equipped kitchen has a microwave and two plate stove and oven. There is a TV room and dining facilities.
Family Flat
This self catering flat has three bedrooms and sleeps six guests. There is one double bed and four twin beds. The en-suite bathroom has both a bath and a shower. There is a fully equipped Kitchen, with microwave, stove and fridge. The lounge has DStv and theflat has air conditioning for your comfort.
Standard Guest Rooms 2 & 3
Each room sleeps two guests. Room 2 has a double bed with an en-suite bathroom that has a shower only. Room 3 has two single beds and a separate bathroom that has both a shower and bath. Both rooms have a stand fan and tea & coffee making

Safe parking is available for your vehicles and trailers whilst you explore the spectacular nature and historical buildings in the village of De Rust. On site you will find a swimming pool and undercover BBQ / braai facilities.

Olivier's Rust is located in the town of De Rust, which is very centrally located - only 35km from Oudtshoorn and approximately 90km from George. It is also surrounded by historical towns like Uniondale, Calitzdorp and Prince Albert. There are a number of wine routes to cellars that produce their own wines. For the more adventurous travellers out there, you will find cycle routes from 23km to 96km in and around De Rust. The Stompdrif Dam is also near to De Rust for those who enjoy fishing or canoeing. De Rust forms part of and is close to some of the most scenic routes in the Little Karoo.
